Gaddafi vows to fight to the last man

Muammar Gaddafi has vowed to "fight to the last man and last woman" as his forces battled poorly armed rebels for control of towns near the capital trying to create a buffer zone around his seat of power. The latest fighting came as Colonel Gaddafi addressed supporters and foreign media in a conference hall in Tripoli. "We will fight until the last man and woman. We will defend Libya from the north to the south," he said. The increasingly violent clashes threatened to transform the 15-day popular rebellion in Libya into a drawn-out civil war. Amid the intensified fighting, the international community stepped up moves to isolate the longtime Libyan leader. Flexing its military muscle, the United States sent warships towards Libya on Tuesday as it sought to keep pressure on Muammar Gaddafi to relinquish his four-decade grip on power.

Minority Affairs Minister Shahbaz Bhatti gunned down in Pakistan

Unknown men shot dead Minority Affairs Minister Shahbaz Bhatti when he was coming back from his mother’s house in I-8/3 in Islamabad on Wednesday. According to the police, Shahbaz visited his mother to inquire about her health. Moments after he left the house, a Suzuki Mehran car intercepted him. Three occupants of Mehran broke the window of his car and fired Kalashnikov’s burst at him and fled. The killers only fired at Shahbaz and did not inflict any harm on his driver. His driver rushed towards the Shifa International Hospital but Shahbaz passed away on the way to hospital. His body was shifted to the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences for postmortem. A pamphlet was also found at the crime scene that reads: "anyone who commits blasphemy against Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), would suffer a similar fate". Islamabad Police Inspector General Wajid Durrani said that the police have provided appropriate security to the minster. But he asked his escort to wait for him at his office, saying that he would be back soon. He said that police found 25 bullet shells from the crime scene and doctors reported that eight bullets struck Shahbaz. A team of doctors have been formed to conduct the postmortem after receiving a formal application from police.
